This is an impressive and magical movable wall sculpture powered by kinetic energy. After winding it up, the internal spring and gears work together to move the front and rear wheels in different patterns back and forth – for up to 14 hours.

Style 2 Vice Versa
I experimented with different spring counts, thicknesses, and angles. Eventually, I arrived at some designs that are visually and dynamically appealing. I checked the pattern by creating an animation simulation of the design. However, the real test was to bring the design to life. My first attempt wasn't quite perfect and was too unbalanced. I made adjustments and optimized my calculation of the center of mass to determine the exact point more accurately. The second attempt was then a complete success.

One half of the pattern looks like unfolding fans, while the other half expands. As this becomes visible, everything is beamed away in a flicker pattern. The constantly changing rotational speeds together with this pattern create a piece that I can hardly resist.

More complex patterns associated with these wheels typically require a more subdued motion than simpler designs to avoid visual chaos. The duality exhibits what I see as a more complex asymmetrical wheel design. To fully comprehend the generated patterns, the mechanism should move the wheels in a predictable way. In contrast, a sculpture like infinity has symmetrical wheels, which is why I opted for a random and unpredictable mechanism there. After designing the wheel for duality, I started experimenting with different movements to find the most exciting visual combination. Once I reached the right balance, I had a sculpture!

How they work:

Hamster! Not really. Each of my kinetic sculptures works like a wood machine powered by a continuously wound spring. While they are visually appealing in a resting state, they reveal their full fascination when in motion. After a simple winding, they provide movement and gentle sounds for varying lengths of time. Longer run times have always been a goal for me. Some models run for 1.5 hours, while others can last up to 24 hours! That is a significant improvement compared to my original designs, which stopped after 20 minutes.
